The 2012 Dodge Avenger ranks 19 out of 19 Affordable Midsize Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 51 published reviews and test drives of the Dodge Avenger, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
With some of the worst four-cylinder fuel economy ratings in the class, test drivers think the 2012 Dodge Avenger can’t compete with other midsize cars.
With so many great midsize cars that stand out for their modern styling, fuel-efficient engines and roomy interiors, it’s hard to get to the front of the pack. With its cramped back seat, small trunk, underpowered base engine and weak brakes, the 2012 Dodge Avenger stands out, but not in a good way. Additionally, the Avenger lacks standard tech features such as Bluetooth and iPod integration.
The 2012 Avenger does get high marks from test drivers for its optional V6 engine, which they say is powerful, smooth and quiet. Auto writers also like the Avenger’s use of high-quality interior materials, which they say help boost the perceived quality of the interior.
Overall, reviewers think the Dodge Avenger still has a long way to go to be on par with most affordable midsize cars. Since its price is in line with other midsize cars that reviewers think are much better, they suggest shopping the competition, where you’ll get more for your money.
Other Cars to Consider
The Toyota Camry is a good car to cross-shop against the Dodge Avenger. Test drivers like its base four-cylinder engine, which is something that can’t be said about the base Avenger. The four-cylinder Camry also gets great fuel economy compared with other midsize cars. Additionally, the Camry’s optional V6 gets the same fuel economy ratings as the base Avenger.
Since many reviewers note that the Dodge Avenger has a cramped back seat and small trunk, midsize car shoppers should also consider the Volkswagen Passat. Test drivers like that the 2012 Passat’s back seat is huge and its trunk is not only big, but deep. The Passat also comes standard with Bluetooth and an auxiliary audio input jack, which aren’t standard on the Avenger.
The new 2012 Dodge Journey American Value package starts at $19,795, including an $800 destination charge, reflecting a $3,200 drop over the 2011 Dodge Journey Express. The 2011 Dodge Journey Express starts at $22,995, including a $750 destination charge.

The 2012 Dodge Durango starts at $29,845, including an $850 destination charge, reflecting a $200 price decrease over the outgoing model. The 2011 Dodge Durango Express starts at $30,045, including an $850 destination charge.
The 2012 Dodge Avenger starts at $19,745, including a $750 destination charge, reflecting a $250 price decrease over the outgoing model. The 2011 Dodge Avenger Express starts at $19,995, including a $750 destination charge.
This is a big year for the Dodge Avenger. Like many vehicles beneath the Chrysler umbrella, it starts 2011 with a wholly redesigned interior, as well as a new V-6. The 3.6-liter Pentastar, as the six-shooter is called, is a vast improvement over its predecessor. Its output of 283 hp is an increase of 20 percent, while the improvements in general power delivery and smoothness are nearly unquantifiable.
For 2012, that engine will power the Avenger R/T that is making its debut at the New York auto show. The R/T sees no uptick in output, nor does the calibration of the six-speed automatic transmission change. But the suspension is stiffened slightly all around. Roll stiffness increases 18 percent, while spring rates increase 17 percent up front and “more than 12 percent” (12.3 percent? 8000 percent?) in the rear. Damping rates increase 15 percent up front and “almost 20” out back. Additionally, the 21-mm rear anti-roll bar is 2 millimeters thicker than the regular car’s.
